When talking about contrast, there are actually a lot of different categories to cover (which we will in later posts), but today I wanted to focus on color contrast, and what better example than to bring a skull to life! (Get it, because skulls are ... dead? - Let's admit, you didn't come here for my sense humor - or lack thereof).
In this example, we primarily see hues of red and green complimenting each other making the painting *pop* even more. We are always told about this color pairing, but if you wanna check out my other skull paintings in orange and blue, and yellow and purple, feel free to visit my Instagram page (linked in the top right) or @VyktoriART.
The reason using complimentary (or opposing) color values has such a great impact because they sit on the opposite sides of a color wheel and our brains are geared to rip them apart. That being said, another characteristics of these unique color pairs can be used to our advantage. See those dark shadows in the face, cast on the ground, and behind the head? These are achieved by mixing the two colors together, to get an even more highly saturated value, than either of them could be individually!

Happy painting,
Viktoria
