I've seen a lot of similar palettes floating around the internet lately - ones that have multiple layers that fold out like steps. This particular palette has 5 steps that fold out, one of which serves as a two part mixing tray, the other four has 3, 4, 5, and 6 watercolor cakes respectively. As well as a sponge on top to clean the water-brush (included), which attaches to the side of the palette through friction grip.

With all of the multiple functions included in this palette, it serves as a convenient and compact travel palette. It also serves as a cost-effective way to start your traveling watercolor journey, however you should keep in mind that you will get what you pay for. Mixes can create vibrant as well as muddy results, although muddy-mixes are more prominent, but mixing colors may not be necessary due to the sheer amount of colors provided; but I am a big believer that we should still keep color harmony in mind whenever possible. We should remember to let the cakes dry before closing the palette, else pigment will transfer to the page above it. The sponge is appreciated, but it's not as absorbent as we would like it to be. We can quickly judge the usefulness of a mixing palette by how much the paint (rather the water in the paint) beads up on the surface, or if it evenly spready out (which is preferred). Water-brushes are great for traveling, but they don't usually give you great control and have synthetic hairs.

All of this is not to say that this isn't a useful palette, only things to consider when determining if this palette is for you. We have included a full view of the palette, as well as swatches and selected mixes; finally the painting of a chibbi-esque tiger swallowtail butterfly to see how the colors interact.

Happy painting,
